TGS: Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailer Appears Mysterious spin-off teases gamers in Japan.

Gamers attending this year's Tokyo Game Show eagerly visited publisher Square Enix's booth, as there were reports that Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the enigmatic spin-off built on the mythology of Final Fantasy XIII proper, was being shown. I joined in on one of the viewing sessions to see for myself, and I was treated to a bevy of trailers for some of Square Enix's biggest upcoming games.

Besides new trailers for the Kingdom Hearts games, 3rd Birthday and the Dissidia sequel (the trailer confirmed Tifa's appearance), the reel ended with new footage of Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Versus XIII. Both these final videos were extremely short, but the footage from Final Fantasy Versus XIII was especially intriguing.

The trailer begins with main character Noctis leaning up against a chain link fence, as pensive heroes usually do in these gorgeous Japanese games. But the trailer quickly cuts to actual gameplay footage of Noctis traversing a massive canyon environment. I was surprised at how large this area was, similar to the dwarfing size of Pulse in Final Fantasy XIII. We soon see Noctis climbing the rocky world before coming upon a deserted gas station, which gave off a very post-apocalyptic vibe.

But the action didn't really start until the second scene in the trailer, where Noctis was throwing down with an imposing behemoth in the middle of a dark city. This was also gameplay footage and showcased Noctis executing a flurry of sword strikes in a very action-packed fight. Sadly, the trailer ended just as soon as it began.

For those desperate for more information, Square Enixannounced at the end of the trailer reel that the company would hold a conference on January 11th of next year to reveal more details. I personally can't wait, so maybe I'll set up a tent outside their offices now...
